October isn’t just for pumpkin spice lattes and cozy sweaters. It’s also Breast Cancer Awareness Month—a time for us to get real about breast health and the life-saving power of early detection.
As a Cyclical Strength Coach, I’m all about showing up strong and being fiercely in tune with your body. That means paying attention to every signal it sends, and yes, that includes your breasts! Monitoring your breast health is the ultimate form of proactive self-care. It’s easy, it’s quick, and it could be the most important check-in you do all month.
Why Breast Health is The Smartest Trend
Breast health has become a trending topic, and for all the right reasons. Women and individuals of all genders are choosing empowerment over ignorance.
- You’re in Control: Like learning to lift heavy weights, breast health is about taking control. Understanding your body is the first step toward a healthier, more informed life.
- Awareness Saves Lives: Thanks to incredible campaigns and organizations, more people know about the signs and the importance of screening than ever before.
- Information is Power: The internet has demystified breast checks and made it easier to access the latest advancements in breast cancer research.
The Three Pillars of Easy Breast Monitoring
Keeping track of your breast health is simpler than you think. It’s a crucial step in catching breast cancer early, when treatment is most effective.
1. Routine Breast Self-Exams (BSEs)
This is your personal, monthly check-in. Just like you schedule your heavy lifts, schedule a quick self-exam. Familiarizing yourself with the normal look and feel of your breasts is your best defense. If you know what’s normal, you’ll spot changes fast.
2. Clinical Breast Exams (CBEs)
These are the professional check-ins. Regular exams with a healthcare provider (like your gynecologist) can catch potential issues you might miss.
3. Mammograms and Advanced Screening
Mammograms are the standard for breast cancer screening. Typically recommended starting at age 40, these powerful tools help identify cancer in its earliest stages. Newer technologies are continually making monitoring more precise and less invasive.
How to Perform Your Breast Self-Check (BSE)
Performing routine breast self-exams is a fundamental aspect of breast health. The best time to do this is a few days after your period ends, when your breasts are least likely to be swollen or tender.
- Visual Inspection (In the Mirror): Stand with your arms at your sides. Look for any changes in size, shape, or contour, as well as any skin dimpling, puckering, or nipple inversion. Then, raise your arms overhead and check again.
- Manual Examination (Lying Down): While lying flat, place a pillow under your right shoulder and your right arm behind your head. Use the first three fingers of your opposite hand to feel your breast tissue. Use small, circular motions, covering the entire breast from collarbone to the top of your abdomen, and from your armpit to your cleavage. Feel for any lumps, thickening, or unusual changes.
- Nipple Check: Gently squeeze each nipple, watching for any discharge, lumps, or changes in appearance.
Remember: The goal is to notice what’s normal for you. If you find anything unusual, please consult a healthcare professional immediately.

Client Win Highlight: “Overall I feel good as far as my workouts and learning to be more in tune with my body’s cyclical nature. Also proud of continuing to work toward better serving my body when it comes to nutrition and even mental health.”
Your well-being is my purpose. This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, make a commitment to prioritize your breast health. By staying informed and performing regular self-checks, you’re taking a proactive step in the fight against breast cancer and promoting overall health and well-being.
