The Little Things

The little things that make us happy

About five years ago I asked myself this question: What brings you happiness?

I have since then started to put together a list of things in my head that I know will help me to feel happy, and peaceful. Here are just a few of the items on my list:

-Dancing to an outrageously awesome dancing song

– Getting a hug from my husband

-Singing along to disney songs

-Making cookies

My list might be different than yours, and that is okay. We all have different things that help us feel happy and at peace. The important thing to know for yourself is what goes on your list.

Why make a list?

Even with our best morning routine, which truly does set us up for a great day, we are bound to come in contact with unwanted stressful events. Whether its anxiety, depression, an argument with a loved one, or a negative event that is out of our control, we all face challenges everyday. In every event we come in contact with, we have a choice of how we will act. The choice we make will affect the way we feel throughout the event 

For example, I have to drive to and from work everyday. For some, that is a simple and even a fun thing to do. For me, it is an extremely stressful and anxiety ridden task. I have many options I can take, some will be more helpful than others. The one that I found that works best for me is singing to uplifting and happy music while I drive. Yes, there are moments while driving that I still feel anxious, but it’s nothing compared to what I felt before I started utilizing my list. 

If we have a list of things that we know help us to be happy, we then have a large set of tools which we can use when we come in contact with a stressful event. Not everything that makes us happy will work in every situation, it might take time to figure out what different things you can do in different situations which will help you be happy, and that is okay. Take the time. Learn more about yourself.  And though they might not solve the challenge, or make it go away. The items on our list can help us face the challenges of our life.
